The National Institute of Justice was visited, on January, 30, 2023, by the human rights adviser for the United Nations country team, the head of the UN Office for Human Rights in Moldova (OHCHR), Bea Ferenci, and the national human rights officer, Dumitru Roman. The representatives held discussions with Ecaterina Popa, ad interim Director of NIJ, Cezara-Elena Polisca, adviser to the Director of NIJ, head of the Didactics, Methodological and Training of Trainers Unit, and Tatiana Ciaglic, head of the Legal Information Center of NIJ.
During the dialogue, were addressed issues regarding the training of legal professionals within the project "Building sustainable and inclusive peace, strengthening trust and social cohesion in Moldova". In order to increase the capacities of NIJ beneficiaries to investigate and examine incidents of hate speech and hate crimes, the parties agreed on possible opportunities to organize training activities in mixed groups which will focus in particular on the new amendments made in the national legislation. The exchange of views also emphasized the need to develop didactic materials that could be used by the Institute during the judicial training process.
The project "Building sustainable and inclusive peace, strengthening trust and social cohesion in Moldova", implemented by three UN agencies: OHCHR, UNDP and UN Women, aims to facilitate the creation of an enabling environment for improved interconnection and engagement between both banks of the Dniester River by promoting and interacting on human rights, gender-sensitive peacebuilding, promoting equal access to essential assistance services, and strengthening social cohesion against the background of heightened regional tensions caused the war in Ukraine.
