Thursday, October 10, 2019, the National Institute of Justice was visited by representatives of the Portuguese law system, Manuel Albano, National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings, Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, Presidency of the Council of Ministers of Portugal, Rita Penedo, Director of the Observatory on Trafficking in Human Beings of the Ministry of Internal Administration of Portugal, and Mario Varela, Inspector of the Border and Migration Service of Portugal.
The guests were greeted by the Director of the National Institute of Justice, Diana Scobioala, who guided them through the headquarters of the institution, showing them the study rooms, the simulation rooms and the video conference room where the meetings of the NIJ Council are held.
The visit took place in the context of the autumn school "The Rights of victims of crimes to rehabilitation and compensation in national context (Law no. 137/2016) and the Portuguese experience", organized by the National Institute of Justice in partnership with the OSCE Mission to Moldova. The participants of the training sessions were judges, prosecutors, representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as representatives of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Interethnic Relations.
During the autumn school, professionals from the law sector and decision makers discussed the ways of improving the national mechanism of rehabilitation and compensation victims of crimes, including the crimes of human trafficking and domestic violence, based on the model of Portugal. Also, were analyzed the existing provisions governing the rights of the victims in criminal proceedings, as well as the protection rules applicable to these categories of victims. At the same time, the participants in the training sessions were acquainted with how victims in Portugal and even abroad can benefit from state compensations for the injuries and damages suffered.
