"Standards on the Rule of Law: Highlights on the Current State of Justice in the Republic of Moldova" was the theme of a public lecture delivered by Gabriela Scutea, EU High Legal Advisor on Justice and Prosecution at the Ministry of Justice and former General Prosecutor of Romania. The event, organized for trainees of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), who are candidates for positions as judges and prosecutors, took place on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the NIJ.
During the lecture, topics concerning the rule of law, democracy, and increasing accountability within the justice sector in the Republic of Moldova were discussed. Gabriela Scutea focused her expertise on European community standards and current trends in the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights. She emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations that enhance public trust in judicial institutions and promote a fair, transparent judicial system that respects fundamental rights and democracy. The discussion also included references to the Rule of Law Report, which covers national justice systems, anti-corruption measures, media pluralism, and institutional checks and balances.
Ecaterina Popa, Head of the Training and Research Department, expressed gratitude to the EU High Legal Advisor, noting that her insights provided relevant and thought-provoking perspectives, essential for shaping a generation of specialists dedicated to strengthening the rule of law in Moldova.
Trainees had the opportunity to engage in discussions and share opinions on the evolution of the national judicial system, particularly in the context of reforms necessary for Moldova's accession to the European Union.
