Member of the Council of the National Institute of Justice, Ion Covalciuc, Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor's Office of the mun. Balti, together with other representatives of the legal system of the Republic of Moldova, recently participated in an exchange program in the United States of America.
Sponsored by the Congressional Office for International Leadership, the program facilitated the transfer of knowledge and best practices between legal professionals from both countries. The Moldovan Delegation made various visits to relevant institutions in the State of North Carolina such as the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District, the U.S. Supreme Court, Guilford County Courthouse, Elon University, Greesboro Police Department of Forensic Science, etc.
At the Elon University School of Law, the NIJ Council member spoke to American teachers and students about the procedures required to become a prosecutor and judge, as well as about the initial training process at the National Institute of Justice, including admission and graduation aspects.
At the meetings with the American counterparts, topics covered included the rule of law, the jurisdiction of federal and state courts, the role of the prosecutor in the US criminal justice system, the legal process of identifying and asset confiscation, judicial education, current challenges in the justice systems, etc.
