Between May 29-31, 2023, the workshop entitled „State response to cases of trafficking in human beings from the perspective of fairness, efficiency and focus of criminal proceedings on victim” took place at the National Institute of Justice.
The workshop, divided into two parts: one theoretical and one practical, was facilitated by Arina Turcan-Dontu, lawyer, and Vitalie Budeci, judge at the Chisinau Court, Buiucani headquarters, NIJ trainers.
On the first day, participants were familiarized with the legislative and institutional framework on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings (THB), evolutionary trends in the THB phenomenon, legal qualification of criminal actions, psychological manipulation and psycho-social profile of THB victims. The beneficiaries also appropriated the particularities of delimiting the crime of THB from the crime of pimping, as well as the similarities and differences between the trafficking of human beings for the purpose of exploitation through labor and forced labor.
Over the next two days, the emphasis was on applying the knowledge acquired through practical exercises to simulate a cause of trafficking in human beings. Thus, the participants prepared the indictment, drafted the act of sending the case in court, simulated the trial of a case of THB, drafted the pleadings, handed down sentences, etc.
It should be noted that, being in the Campaign of promoting NIJ Admission -2023, members of the Association of Law Students of the State University of Moldova were also invited to the mock trial within the workshop to get acquainted with the training modalities at NIJ and become potential trainees of the National Institute of Justice.
The workshop was organized by the National Institute of Justice in partnership with the United Nations Agency for Combating Drugs and Crime (UNODC) „Unlocking the impunity of traffickers and supporting justice for victims of trafficking in people in Southeast Europe”.
