In the context of the national campaign „Week of combating trafficking in human beings”, Friday, October 20, at the National Institute of Justice took place a mock trial on the state's response to cases of trafficking in human beings from the perspective of fairness and the focus of the criminal process on the victim.
The event was attended by trainees of the National Institute of Justice and students from the Faculty of Law of the State University of the Republic of Moldova, who were mentored by trainers Arina Turcan-Dontu, NIJ trainer, lawyer, and Alina Savga, doctor of law, SUM associate professor.
During the activity, the young lawyers displayed their knowledge through the practical exercises of simulating a case of trafficking in human beings –NIJ trainees assuming the roles of judges and prosecutor, and SUM students – role as parties in the process. Thus, the participants prepared the indictment, drafted the act of sending the case in court, simulated the process of a case of trafficking in human beings, elaborated the pleadings, pronounced the sentence, etc.
The national campaign „The week of combating trafficking in human beings” takes place for the twelfth consecutive year in order to mark on October 18 the European Day for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and inform the public about human trafficking, the risks and consequences of this phenomenon, being an important step in the long-term commitment to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings.
